So you’ve decided you’re going to buy some plans for chicken coops and build your own hen house – great idea. It will save you lots of money and give you a tremendous sense of satisfaction.
If you’ve got some woodworking or DIY experience and a nice shed full of tools, nothing can stop you!
On the other hand, if you’re new to all this but still want to have a go – and why shouldn’t you – there are a few tools that will make putting your chicken coop plans into action a lot easier.
My advice would be to buy your chicken coop plans first, spend a while studying them, then get the tools you don’t already own. There won’t be many, and what you spend on them is really up to you. As with most things, the more you spend, the better quality you get, but if you’re only going to build one hen house, you can always buy budget gear if you like.
Likewise power tools – do you really need them? I suppose a hand-drill is a bit of a rarity these days, most people already own a power drill of some kind. What about an electric saw? An ordinary one will probably do the trick, it just depends whether your arm is up to it!
You’ll need a hammer, something to cut wire, a screwdriver, a measuring tape and the drill and saw already mentioned. A level and a square are good ideas – unless you want a chicken coop that’s on a jaunty angle, that is!
Like I said, referring to your plans for chicken coops first will give you all you need to know and even if you’ve got none of the things listed it’ll still most likely work out way cheaper than the chicken coops for sale that you see around!
If you’re looking for woodwork tools online I have a particular favorite supplier. They’re called Woodcraft and they’re long established, very helpful and have great prices. What more could you want?
